En 1929 Lorenzo Mario quitta son Italie natale et traversa la frontière française, à l’âge de 20 ans, pour fuir un régime fasciste qu’il réprouvait.
En 1969, Bernadette, âgée de 11 ans, quitta son Cameroun natal au bras de son frère ainé, envoyée en France par ses parents, contre sa volonté d’enfant.
Je suis le fruit de ces exils, celui de mon grand-père paternel et de ma mère.
Je suis la somme de ces cultures mises à distance, retrouvées puis entrelacées par le doux hasard des rencontres. Des personnalités en reconstruction puis en co-construction.
Ma série d’œuvres « Identités imaginaires » a pris naissance dans mes origines camerounaises.
Mes premières sources d’inspiration furent les masques « passeport » très présents en Afrique Centrale et notamment au Cameroun.
Ces objets d’artisanat d’une grande vitalité formelle et chromatique, autrefois utilisés comme preuves identitaires, m’ont questionné sur la manière de représenter l’identité d’un individu par le biais de l’art graphique.
J’ai ainsi commencé à dessiner mes propres « masques » en projetant dans ces œuvres mes codes multiculturels, puis en les entremêlant peu à peu à d’autres marqueurs identitaires de peuples du monde entier. J’ai imaginé des formes, des couleurs, des motifs, des figures géométriques, qui convoqueraient des parures africaines et des dorures italiennes, des couronnes amazoniennes, qui emprunteraient à la nature et au monde animal…
En créant ces images non figuratives pour la plupart, je souhaite parler d’une identité multiple, complexe, mixte. Ces représentations se lisent comme des cartographies intimes évoquant les voyages intérieurs d’une femme, d’un(e) humain(e). Elles racontent l’être au-delà des apparences et des catégories, et, de manière infuse, dans sa relation au Sacré.
Elles sont, en outre, des réponses illustrées très personnelles à cette question qui m’habite :
« Qu’y a-t-il vraiment entre les racines et le ciel ? »

I am the sum of these cultures initially separate, then encountered and intertwined by the sweet chance of meeting.

My series of artworks « Imaginary Identities » originated in my Cameroonian roots.
My first sources of inspiration were the « passport » masks which are very present in Central Africa and especially in Cameroon.
These little handicrafts with great color vitality and beautiful scheme used to be markers of identity.
These masks made me question our relationship to identity.
I started to think about another way to define ourselves, through graphic art.
I thus began to draw my own «masks» by projecting my multicultural codes in these artworks, then gradually intermixing them with other identity markers of peoples around the world.
I imagined shapes, colors, geometric figures, which would summon African ornaments and Italian gilding. Traditional fabrics, artisanal weaving inspired me some patterns.
I also get inspired by Amazonian crowns, some natural elements and animals…
By creating these non-figurative images, I want to talk about a multiple, complex, mixed identity.
These representations tell intimate maps evoking the inner journeys of a woman / a human..
It is a way of going beyond appearances and categories.
And finally, something akin to the «Sacred» emerges.
